SA: Brad keeps cool on Magnum
By Peter Neall, July 13, 2026 - 12:37 PM

The track might have been deteriorating but the day only got better for the Rawiller family at Morphettville last Saturday, with uncle Brad and nephew Campbell riding a winner apiece.
The Parks track started out as a soft 6 but was a heavy 10 by the time Brad Rawiller took the last, a 1250-metre benchmark 64, on Cool Magnum ($6.50) for the Murray Bridge stable of John Hickmott and Carrina Riggs.
Cool Magnum jumped from barrier 12 and raced wide, the tactic adopted by most winners on the day.
Campbell Rawiller brought up his win midway through the day on Jandami ($7.50) in a 1578-metre benchmark 62 for Telopea Downs trainer Darryl Dodson.
The younger Rawiller made it two wins for the weekend when the Jason Post-trained Unique Poet ($17) won a 900-metre maiden plate at Mount Gambier on Sunday.
Ash breaks through
Another galloper to relish the rain at Morphettville on Saturday was the Stephanie Lacy-trained Prickly Poppy, who defied her $51 starting price by taking the M&J Chickens 0-62 Handicap (2294m), delivering jockey Ashvin Goindasamy his first SA metro win since relocating from Queensland in February.
“I thought today the heavy track should suit her,” Goindasamy said. “She’s a mare that just doesn’t give up. When the going gets hard, she just goes through it. She was very tough.”
After racing on the pace, Prickly Poppy was overtaken by several runners rounding the turn but fought back bravely.
Murray Bridge-based Lacy bought the Belardo mare online for $2000 in February. She has earned $32,825 in seven starts since.
Rubare romps in
A big day for the Flemington stable of Nick Ryan kicked off when two-year-old Rubare ($3.90) won the Sportsbet Feed Handicap (1000), a Class 1 for two-year-olds.
Victorian apprentice Rose Hammond guided the Rubick filly to a convincing 1¾-length victory to take her record to five starts for two wins and a second.
Ryan completed a two-state double when Winnasedge landed some decent bets ($5.50-$4.40 favourite) in the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes over 1100 metres at Caulfield.
Back in town
Lauren Stojakovic notched the second city win of her comeback when Mellifluent ($9.50) took a 1400-metre benchmark 66 at the Parks meeting for Strathalbyn co-trainers Wayne Francis and Glen Kent.
Stojakovic, who returned to race riding last October after an eight-year layoff, has ridden 18 winners overall this season.
Willy wins again
Gawler trainer George Dimitropoulos was proud as punch of Willybeafactor after the veteran wet-tracker won a benchmark 76 over 1578 metres at the Parks meeting.
Ridden by the in-form Stacey Metcalfe, a  good mate of Dimitropolous, Willybeafactor ($4.20) ran on from midfield to take his overall record to 92 starts for 13 wins and $437,410.
The rising 10-year-old, who’s been with the Gawler trainer for nine wins across five seasons, has scored 12 of his wins on soft and heavy tracks.
