SA: Treble takes Jollys back to the top
By Peter Neall, August 17, 2026 - 10:16 AM

The father-daughter stable of Richard and Chantelle Jolly took an early lead in the Adelaide premiership for 2026/27 with a treble on the Parks track at Morphettville last Saturday.
The Jollys got the ball rolling in the first, the benchmark 78 Sportsbet Jockey Watch Handicap (2426m), with last-start winner Harsh ($2.15 favourite).
The Brutal mare came from last with a strong run over the concluding stages to give rider Harry Grace the first leg of a running double.
The Jollys and Grace were at it again 34 minutes later when Super Wonder ($4.40 favourite) led all the way in the Sportsbet Blackbook Maiden Plate (1000m).
Intellectual ($3.50) completed the Jollys’ early treble in race four, the Class 2 Thomas Farms Handicap (1000m).
The four-year-old gelding was ridden by Jake Toeroek, who is easing himself back into the saddle after being sidelined with a fractured lower leg sustained in the barriers at Strathalbyn in late April.
The Jollys’ treble took the stable to four Adelaide wins for the season, one clear of second-placed Phillip and Tommy Stokes.
The Jollys were premiers in 2021/22 and 2022/23 but have had to settle for second in the three seasons since, behind Will Clarken and Niki O’Shea in 2023/24 and behind Phillip Stokes in 2024/25 and 2025/26.
Babe on the rise
Andrew Gluyas has black-type ambitions for Bassett Babe after the four-year-old’s win in last Saturday’s benchmark 78 Sportsbet Race Previews Handicap (1000m).
Presenting rider Jason Holder with the first leg of his double, Bassett Babe ($2.30 favourite) came from well back with an outside run to bring up her third win from five starts.
Gluyas stated afterwards that he might consider starting her in the listed 1100-metre W.H. Wylie Handicap next month.
Holder completed his double on Nostryia ($9.50) in the 0-66 Sportsbet Green Tick Handicap (1000m).
A first city winner for Balaklava trainer Kate Halliday, Nostryia came from midfield with a strong run over the concluding stages.
Brace for Brooke
Promising apprentice Brooke King landed the first leg of a double when she rode Nicish ($6.50) to victory for Phillip and Tommy Stokes in the benchmark 56 Hahn Handicap (1569m) at the Parks meeting.
Nicish was King’s 100th winner, a total four more than the career total of her mother, former jockey Raygan Koch.
King completed her double on Mansiere ($4.20 favourite) in the 0-62 Festival Hire Handicap (1250m) for the Wistow stable of Jeff Maund and Karen Letts-Maund.
Stephy’s off to a flyer
Apprentice Stephy Wright made a memorable riding debut at last Saturday’s once-a-year meeting at Quorn, with two winners from three rides including a cup victory.
Wright teamed with Murray Bridge trainer David Page to take a 1200-metre benchmark 58 at her first race ride, on Brullen ($3 favourite).
Her winner in the Quorn Cup (1900m) was also trained by Page — Titan Rising ($13).
Wright is apprenticed to Heather Lehmann at Murray Bridge.
