Chloe Wells was the standout performer at Devonport on Wednesday with a riding treble.
She opened her account in the first event on the card, a Class 3 handicap over 1150 metres, aboard the Mark Ganderton-trained Glory Mission. The Stratosphere gelding faced the breeze before drawing clear for a soft 1¾-length win over stablemate Thickskinned, who made good ground from the tail.
The sparingly raced six-year-old was having his first outing since May 2025 but had won both lead-in trials and now has four wins from 10 starts.
Wells next combined with her father, Dean, to stage a major upset in the day’s feature, a $35,000 open handicap over the same course with Bold Instinct.
The gelded son of Impending hadn’t won since June 1, 2025, and therefore started at $51 but he had shown improvement placing behind dominant all-the-way victor Alpine Thunder in lesser grade last week. After enjoying a box-seat trail he cruised to a comfortable 2½-length victory.
Wells then made it a running double aboard Angela Brakey’s confidently backed charge Brave Jet ($5-$3.30), who faced the breeze and scraped home in the Class 1 handicap, also over 1150 metres.
The gelded son of Brave Smash was specked at healthy odds at the same track last week, staging a form reversal to place, and went right on with it on the seven-day back up.
Cup heroes head to Flemington
Tasmanians will launch a two-pronged assault on the $150,000 Ronald McDonald House Vic/Tas Trophy (1700m) at Flemington this Saturday, with Devonport and Launceston cups winner Asva as well as Hobart Cup winner Blonde Star lining up.
The Glenn Stevenson-prepared Asva was right on the heels of short-priced favourite Sass Appeal when resuming at the same track before enduring a wide run in a small field at Sandown second up.
He should get every chance to bounce back from gate two this weekend.
The Imogen Miller-trained Blonde Star failed to finish off at Hobart fresh but was much better second up, placed behind in-form galloper Rubbleonthedouble at the same track.
The Tassie raiders are unfancied (at $19 and $26 respectively) but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see one or both play a role in the finish.
