SA: Cup adds momentum to Callow comeback
By Peter Neall, October 5, 2026 - 10:51 PM

Five-time Group 1-winning jockey Noel Callow returned to the black-type winners’ list for the first time since a 10-month ban when he steered St Lawrence to victory in last Saturday’s listed $150,000 Murray Bridge Gold Cup (1600m).
The Gavin Bedggood-trained $3.80 favourite looked to have the race shot to pieces when he pounced on the leader, Gawler-trained $18 pop Sir Kingsford, early in the straight and cleared away.
Sir Kingsford rallied sensationally in the dying moments under Teagan Voorham but St Lawrence clung on doggedly to get the nod in a tight photo finish.
The win was “King” Callow’s first at stakes level since the Group 2 Queensland Guineas in May 2025. He had served a disqualfication in the interim after being charged by Queensland stewards with starting a jockey-room fight at Doomben and using “racially charged” language in videos recorded in Darwin, for which he apologised.
Since relocating to SA and resuming race riding on August 1, he has ridden nine winners, eight at metro level, placing him in the equal lead on the Adelaide premiership with Caitlin Tootell and Shayleigh Ingelse.
Rochelle Milnes took the riding honours at the Murray Bridge Cup meeting, landing the first leg of a back-to-back double when three-year-old Yourworstnightmare ($6.50) came from well back with a withering run to take out the Pat O’Reilly Memorial Maiden Plate (1200m) for Strathalbyn trainer Jake Stephens.
Milnes completed her double in the benchmark 64 Fore Design Flex Planning Handicap (1100m) on Anotherhouse ($3.90), who was first up from a spell for local trainer Kristi Evans.
Sit, Stalker spring surprise
The Morphettville stable of Gordon Richards and Damien Moyle took the outright lead on the Adelaide premiership when The Stalker ($21) scored a surprise win in the Spry Civil Construction Reg Nolan OAM Flying Handicap (1200m) at the Bridge.
The front-running chestnut had been unplaced at benchmark 72 level at his last start with 60.5kg, but a freshen-up and a feather weight (51kg) worked wonders last Saturday as The Stalker held out Tom Dabernig-trained multiple stakes winner Shadhavar.
Crucial to the victory was the three-kilo claim of stable apprentice Isaac Sit, who thus notched his 50th career win on the horse reported to be his favourite.
Doudle’s get-out double
Nangkita trainer Travis Doudle finished his Saturday in style, winning the last last race on the card at both Murray Bridge and the once-a-year non-TAB meeting at Jamestown.
Doudle’s winner at the Bridge was You Sexy Thing ($5.50), ridden by Ben Price in the benchmark 72 Gifford Hill Estate Handicap (1400m).
His winner at Jamestown was Bonfire Girl ($2.50 favourite) in a 1200-metre benchmark 54. Apprentice Sophie Potter rode Bonfire Girl to complete a bookend double, having taken the 1000-metre maiden that opened the day on Captainwackydoodle ($9) for Balaklava trainer Kate Halliday.
Potter shared the honours at Jamestown with Wesley Cave, who won a 1340-metre benchmark 58 on I’m Kenny ($6) for Gawler trainers Darren and Aimee Magro and the benchmark 70 Jamestown Cup (1800m) in a thriller by a nose on Everlasting Kiss ($8) for Wayne Brown, also based at Gawler.
Another highlight of the day saw dual licensee Margaret Collett notch her first winner as a trainer with Kryal Castle ($7), ridden by apprentice Polly Brewster.
Potter went on to make it a big weekend with a double at Port Lincoln’s season-opener on Sunday.
Her winners were both trained locally by Byron Cozamanis junior — Vasilias ($4.40) in a 1000-metre maiden plate and Talent Scout ($3.80 favourite) in a benchmark 66 of 1210 metres.
Oakbank-based John Dunn and Krystal Bishop shared the training honours with Cozamanis, Only One Ruler ($31) winning a 1210-metre maiden plate under Caitlin Munro and Another Bride ($6.50) scoring in 0-54 class over 1000 metres under Rochelle Milnes.
Two for Toeroek
SA’s Labour Day holiday Gawler meeting last Monday yielded a double for jockey Jake Toeroek — on The Black Harp ($2.60 favourite) in a 1516-metre maiden plate for David Jolly and Jason Potter and Trantoro ($3.70 favourite) in a 1200-metre benchmark 66 for Stuart Gower.
