Stawell trainer Andrew Bobbin enjoyed an extraordinary day out last Saturday, notching five winners across the Hamilton and Manangatang meetings.
Up north, Miracle Spin ($9) carried 8kg (!) more than any rival in the Manangatang Cup but fought hard late to claim the prize by a long neck in a willing finish.
Bobbin completed a treble at Manang — all ridden by Jack Martin — with Hellish Lee ($10) breaking her maiden status at start number nine while lightly raced six-year-old The Mount ($5) recorded his second win in the 1175-metre benchmark 52.
Followers of this column would have been well pleased with the Bobbin stable’s winning double at Hamilton on Saturday.
Identified as runners to follow from a recent set of Ararat jumpouts, both Accuser ($3.90) and Rich Champagne ($21) saluted first up on a day to remember for the Lake Fyans operation.
Cavalry’s ready to charge
While a deluge of rain cruelled last Saturday week’s Murtoa Cup meeting, an excellent surface was on offer for an interesting morning of jumpouts there on the following Wednesday.
Tom Dabernig’s speedster Cavalry Girl never got out of second gear coasting around to win the opening 900-metre heat of the morning in good time (54.49 seconds).
Runner-up in the Group 1 Moir Stakes last start, the four-year-old daughter of Bivouac will be right in the market and hard to beat when she takes on the Group 2 Henley Homes Sprint this Saturday.
Team McEvoy galloper Valentina Girl proved her recent Ararat jumpout win was no fluke by recording the fastest time of the morning (53.65) in winning her 900-metre heat. The three-year-old daughter of Russian Revolution has her share of ability and must be followed on debut at Horsham this Sunday.
Sunday feast
This Sunday promises a bumper Horsham Cup meeting, with excellent prizemoney on offer across the card.
Early in the day there’s a $55,000 maiden over 1100 metres, while the 2100-metre Horsham Cup carries $65,000 in prizemoney, with another $30,000 on top for VOBIS-qualified horses.
The winner of heat five of the Melbourne Cup Carnival Country Series takes home more than half of the $100,000 purse on offer, and Horsham trainer Paul Preusker heads in with a leading chance for the locals.
His six-year-old mare Final Countdown has won her past two starts at 1400 metres and stays at that trip on Sunday, looking to make it a hat-trick and book her place in the $500,000 final at Flemington on Oaks day.
