While the focus was on Caulfield last Saturday, central Victorian trainers largely targeted the Wodonga meeting, producing the winners of all six races.
The meeting kicked off with Wangaratta’s Craig Weeding taking out the 1100-metre maiden with Hazardous, the $2.50 favourite scoring by a comfortable two lengths under Justin Stanley.
The Hayes brothers’ Euroa branch took out race two, the 1400-metre maiden, with first-starter and $1.85 favoruite Don’tpushsend, a three-year-old Written By gelding with a promising future.
That was the start of a race-to-race double for three-kilo claimer Zac Moore, who took race three, the benchmark 52 over 1400 metres, on the John and Chris Ledger-trained $3.60 favourite Salina Special.
Race four, the benchmark 52 over 1590 metres, saw Tatura trainer Neil Girvan successful with seven-year-old Wandjina gelding Wambeen, ridden by Cory Parish.
Wambeen was the only non-favourite to win at Wodonga, and even he provided little relief for the bookies, starting at $3.30. The $3.20 favourite, Rivazza, ran second.
Both Rivazza and third-placed Jayzeal are trained at Seymour by Christoper Davis, who went one better in the following race, a benchmark 52 over 2050 metres, with Surely Special ($3.20 favourite). Parish was in the saddle to make it a running double.
The last, a 1200-metre benchmark 52, saw Wangaratta’s John Fitzgerald successful with $3.40 favourite Time Angel in the hands of apprentice Bailey Kinninmont.
Further south at Bendigo, Wangaratta’s John and Chris Ledger completed a two-venue double when Shelly’s Legacy ($4.80) won the 1000-metre 0-56 under Neil Farley.
In the 0-56 over 1600 metres, Seymour’s Rhys Archard scored by the narrowest margin with Carnival Riches ($6), from Tabilk trainer Saab Hasan’s Positivo.
Hasan did have a winner across the border, at Deniliquin, with Harry Devil taking out a Class 1 over 1400 metres by an easy 4¼ lengths under Nathan Punch.
The Deniliquin Gold Cup saw Eamonn’s Memory, the eight-year-old veteran of 90 starts trained by Andrew Dale of Wangaratta, take out his third NSW country cup of the season, following the features at Griffith and Jerilderie
The Per Incanto gelding has now amassed $317,000 in earnings.
