Tasmania: Rising star Prince caps Erica's night

Erica Byrne Burke dominated last Friday night’s Launceston meeting, riding half the winners on the eight-event card.
She set the tone in the night’s opener, a maiden plate over 1600 metres, on the Matthew Brown-trained Shines Discreetly, who proved too tough despite being posted three wide without cover throughout.
Byrne Burke’s second success came via Monica Ryan’s honest mare Genuine Lady, who shared the pace with short-priced favourite John Of Jane in the Class 1 handicap over 1200 metres and showed plenty of tenacity to fend off that galloper after a two-horse war.
The reigning premiership winner combined with her former master Adam Trinder for her final two victories, kicking off with Ozonica, who faced the breeze before drawing clear for a comfortable 1¾ length win in the 1200-metre Class 3 handicap.
The gelded son of Stratosphere has now won four from nine appearances and placed on another three occasions, with Friday night’s success his first on turf.
His fellow Stratosphere gelding Prince Of Khatun rounded out Byrne Burke’s four-timer by taking the night’s feature, a $35,000 open handicap over 1100 metres.
Heavily backed ($4.40-$3), Trinder’s charge jumped to an early lead but, after being challenged by Mastretta, Byrne Burke elected to stalk that mare, wearing her down inside the final 100 metres before fending off the late surge of the in-form Glory Mission.
Prince Of Khatun had only narrowly taken a benchmark 68 handicap over 1200 metres when resuming a fortnight earlier but handled the sharp rise in grade in fine style.
He will next take on some of the state’s best sprinters in the Goodwood Handicap at Hobart on Melbourne Cup day.
