SA: Callow completes a hat-trick of doubles

Noel Callow’s happy homecoming continued with a running double at Morphettville last Saturday, stretching his lead on the Adelaide jockeys’ premiership to five wins.
Callow, who returned to his state of origin from Queensland at the start of this season having served a 10-month disqualification, has 14 Adelaide winners for 2026/27.
He has racked up four city doubles including three in a row over the past three Saturdays on the main track at Morphettville.
He brought up last week’s first winner when the four-year-old second-time starter Confucious Flyer ($1.16 favourite) won the Sportsbet Get On Extra Maiden Plate (1050m) — after a 30-minute delay when the field was recalled from the barriers following a lightning strike in the area.
Prepared at Morphettville by Stuart Gower, Confucious Flyer made all the running to cruise home by four lengths.
“He’s still learning, but all they have to do is win,” said Gower, who revealed that Confucious Flyer had been destined to race overseas until injuring a tendon during his vet test.
The Doubtland gelding is likely to have one more run before being sent to the paddock ahead of an autumn preparation.
Callow completed his double on another on-pacer, Trebilco ($11), in the Class 2 Greenway Turf Solutions Handicap (1200m).
That win was the first leg of a training double for another native South Aussie, Hall of Fame trainer John Hawkes, in partnership with sons Wayne and Michael.
The Hawkes team brought up the second leg of their double when Prince Magnetite ($9) won the Class 1 Ule Hoof Oil Handicap (1500m) from on the pace under Todd Pannell.
A profitable Racket
Mildura trainer Raharna McDonald pulled the right rein in August when she picked up six-year-old Queenslander Holy Racket online for just $4750.
The Swiss Ace gelding’s four starts for McDonald have yielded a second and two wins, most recently at last Saturday’s Morphettville meeting in the benchmark 84 Sportsbet Green Tick Handicap (1200m).
The win took the chestnut’s earnings for McDonald to $74,150.
Holy Racket ($10) led from barrier four under Shayleigh Ingelse, who is second to Noel Callow on the premiership table with nine wins.
Buddha is the Gawler guru
Bamyan Buddha cemented his status as the Gawler Cup king with victory in the $107,500 feature over 1500 metres last Friday.
Trained at Murray Bridge by Grant Young, the Rich Enuff gelding won the 2024 Gawler Cup and dead-heated for second in 2025.
After jumping from barrier 14 under talented apprentice Brooke King, Bamyan Buddha ($6) came from midfield for a brave win over the Chris Bieg-trained Teardrop Rotation ($21) and the Justin Pickering-trained Jilladora ($41).
Bamyan Buddha has now had nine starts at Gawler for five wins and two seconds. He’s won six from 48 elsewhere.
The eight-year-old is likely to have his next start in the listed John Letts Cup (1800m) at Morphettville on Tuesday.
Sandgropers are sizzling
Gawler trainer Indianna Weinert and jockey Austin Galati kicked off a big couple of days with two starters for two winners at the Gawler meeting.
The expat West Australians scored their race-to-race double with Champagne Jenni ($7) in a 1200-metre benchmark 64 handicap and Win To Retire ($4) in a 1700-metre 0-56 handicap.
Weinert and Galati went to Flemington the next day to win the Group 2 Cirka McEwen Stakes (1200m) with Smooth Chino ($8.50).
