Wimmera: Martin puts on a clinic at Wyche
By Josh Miller, November 4, 2026 - 3:34 PM

Saturday’s Wycheproof Cup meeting turned into the Jack Martin show, the talented jockey ambushing the program with four of the seven winners.
Martin teamed up with Swan Hill trainer Heath Chalmers to lead from start to finish aboard More Give It ($11) in the 1400-metre maiden, before completing a race-to-race double on True Spirit ($3) for Ben Brisbourne over 1050 metres.
Martin would make it three from three in the next race when Grumpyoldcol ($11) kept rolling out in front to dominate the 1050-metre benchmark 52 for Stawell trainer Rachael Samsonenko.
There were rumblings that Harry Coffey’s remarkable feat of six winners in 2016 could be matched by a rampaging Martin, but he was forced to wait until the last event to clock in with win number four, this time combining with Andrew Bobbin and $2.90 favourite French Reign in the 1400-metre benchmark 56.
Not bad, Jack.
Switch on
Ballarat trainer Mitch Freedman took home the vup from Wycheproof on Saturday, his six-year-old Switch Hit ($5) proving too good in the 1800-metre feature.
Chelsea Taylor rode a patient race at the tail of the eight-horse field, slicing through tiring runners approaching the home bend before hitting the front at the 100-metre mark.
Taylor rode with vigour in the closing stages and put an exclamation mark on the win, recording a 3¼-length margin on the line from $2.25 favourite Scalextrics.
Switch Hit had placed in five of seven runs this preparation leading into Saturday, when the gelded son of Ambidexter recorded his fourth career win from 23 starts.

Attention turns to Ararat on Sunday for a packed program, headlined by the 2200-metre Ararat Gold Cup, carrying $110,000 in prizemoney. Other features include the 1300-metre Ararat Bowl, worth $44,000 to the winner, and a 4000-metre qualifying heat for this month’s Jericho Cup.
