Letter of the Week
Not forgotten
A follow-up to Keith Williams’s memories of the great steeplechaser Crisp (24/5).
I was at Ascot races in 2003 and asked an English gent for directions on course. He picked the accent and proceeded to give me a 10-minute dissertation on how wonderful our Crisp was some 30 years earlier!
In the 1973 Grand National at Aintree, Crisp carried 12 stone (76kg) and was runner-up to the great Red Rum, who had 10st 5lb (65kg). Grabbed close to the winning post.
Red Rum went on to win two further Nationals.
A fitting tribute to Crisp would be a statue at Flemington, but only after jumps racing resumes there.
