Letter of the Week

Realistic view

Heath Rice (21/7) says, "So do we penalise jockeys for failing to win by four or five lengths?"

I agree with him that we should not.

However, I do think that a horse about a length in front, about 100 metres from home and under pressure, should be ridden out (not necessarily whipped). Otherwise people would not bet on races.

I really thought that Heath’s letter was airy-faiy and fanciful. He should come down from the clouds, take off those rose-coloured glasses and take a realistic view of racing.

In defending Luke Nolen’s ride at Royal Ascot, he is defending the indefensible.

I shall not forget the look on Nolen’s face after the race. He was disgusted with himself, and rightly so.
