You can run into a good one ...

Memories came flooding back after Shako won the first race at the Sunshine Coast last Friday.
Back in the late 1960s, Adelaide’s top two-year-old was trained by Ab Macdonald. His name was also Shako and after winning the Fulham Park Plate down the straight five (1000m) at Victoria Park and the Balcrest Stakes at Cheltenham, he went to Melbourne.
Ridden by Bob Cox and starting favorite in the Debutant Stakes over 4½ furlongs (900m) at Caulfield on October 12, 1968, he happened to run into a first-starter — a freak called Vain who started at the amazing odds of 6/1.
It’s history now Vain went on to win 12 of his 14 starts and was retired to stud after a track mishap in 1969.
