Long may he reign
At the risk of taking Ray Frank’s letter regarding Lloyd Williams (25/11) as serious, as opposed to tongue-in-cheek, I might ask Ray: are you a punter and do you like to win? If the letter is serious, it is hard to understand your motivation.
Ray proposes Lloyd Williams be limited to only one runner in future Melbourne Cups, to be burdened with the highest weight (presumably regardless of its ability or form) and to start from the widest barrier.
If Ray is a punter, I point to John Barker’s pre-Cup item (7/11) indicating how money can be made from backing every Lloyd Williams Melbourne Cup runner every year over the past 11 years.
In a previous letter I also have indicated I am well in front on Melbourne Cup investments since following the process of backing each LW horse at the correct percentage relative to price since Efficient in 2007.
As I said, I have a strong suspicion Ray was joking. If not, Ray, loosen up, get on to a good thing and join the many successful Lloyd Williams Melbourne Cup supporters.
Don’t suggest snuffing out a successful punting prospect.
As Michael Gamble observed, this type of unfair criticism seems to be based on the tall poppy syndrome.
