Unforgettable
What a wonderfully emotional article by Shane Templeton (“If there were cups for courage …”, 22/8).
One suspects the big Grey holds a special place in Shane’s heart, as he did and probably still does in the hearts of many punters.
But in Shane’s article you can feel the emotions of respect, admiration and, yes, even love coming through his writings interspersed between verses of the great song presented by the late Tex Morton.
Shane’s choice of vocabulary and phrasing is brilliant and restored memories of my own limited experiences of the great horse.
Sadly he raced in an era when business commitments gave me few opportunities to see him, but on those rare occasions I enjoyed the privilege, he left a lasting impression to this day.
There’ll never be another Goondiwindi Grey, bar none. Congratulations, Shane.
