Unforgettable
Matt Stewart in his Sunday Herald Sun column dated February 16 reviewed race number two at Flemington the day before, the Hilton Nicholas Handicap, in very simple terms. His comment was a dismissive: "Forget everything in the race."
"Everything" I assume included the winner, Akzar.
Since that rather disrespectful review, Akzar has gone on to record another win at Flemington on March 1, followed by close seconds at Caulfield in two races including the Group 3 Easter Cup, where Akzar was runner-up to a horse many a good judge is touting as a group horse in the spring, Our Voodoo Prince.
Akzar went on to record a stunning six-length victory in the time honoured Warrnambool Cup at listed level, taking his prizemoney back close to $ 300,000.
At the time of writing, Akzar is second favourite for the Doomben Cup behind the multiple Group 1 winner Streama.
Mr Stewart may have told us to forget everything in the race, but I’m glad — and so is my betting account —that the only thing I forgot was to take his advice.
Go Akzar!
