No class

You wonder why there is nobody at the provincial races these days.

I have been an avid racegoer for more than 60 years as owner, trainer and punter and look at what we had on offer at Newcastle on August 10.Of the eight races, four are maidens, there is a Class 1, a Class 2 and two low benchmark races. Without some open races, what chance does a fair dinkum punter have?

Our program seems to be intended to cater to anyone but the provincial/country trainer.

Then again, Tommy Smith won the city premiership for 33 years and only came to the provincials for the cups.

Have a look at the betting ring these days — deserted. There is nothing to encourage a punter to come to the races with the programs that we have.
