Tootell recall
I enjoy the Snippets column immensely. Regarding jockeys who rode their first winner in town (9/7, 16/7), to my knowledge David Tootell — still competitive in SA, where he is the oldest licensed jockey — rode his first winner as an apprentice in his first ride in a race on the now defunct Victoria Park track.
The horse’s name was Berangere, trained by the mercurial Bart Cummings. I’m not sure of the year.
