Inexact science
Re trackwork times (More Say 28/11, 5/12), if only it were that simple!
As a Victorian track rider, I interpret half pace as 20-21 seconds per 200m, three-quarter pace as 17 seconds and even time as 15 seconds. I hear this differs between states. However, the further out on the track around the bend, the more seconds need to be counted in order to maintain a consistent speed.
I have also been asked to "bowl" a horse around, or to work in a strong canter, a bold canter, a swinging canter and a happy canter.
I really enjoy those pea-soup mornings!
