Super bravery

Flemington’s Super Saturday meeting turned to chaos shortly after the running of the Newmarket Handicap, as most readers would be aware. In particular, several horses broke from their strappers when spooked by the sudden extreme weather conditions.

In another case of racing looking after its own, strappers from many stables came to the aid of others in desperate need. King Pulse became cast in the pre-parade ring fence, the horse injured, exhausted, scared and hanging helplessly over the rail.

Stable staff who heard the cries for help and thunderous crashes didn’t hesitate to brave driving, golf-ball sized hail that left bumps, bruises and welts from head to toe to assist the stricken animal.

They worked feverishly together to lift the 500kg-plus animal over the rail, then urge him to his feet and to safety, away from the battering he was copping, lying there in the hail. Their commitment to their animals is unquestioned and very rarely recognised.

I just wanted to make sure their efforts did not go unnoticed. Let’s hope for all concerned that King Pulse makes a full recovery. I’m sure all involved in rescuing him would hope so, especially.
