Letter of the Week
Go fourth
I find it strange that there are two place dividends payable on race fields of 5-7 runners and three place dividends on fields with eight runners or more.
Given that many of our fields comprise 12-plus runners, why is it not possible for both bookmakers and the TAB to pay punters a fourth place dividend in such races?
Not only would this appear to be fair but it may also encourage more punters to try place betting, even if the place dividend has to be adjusted for one reason or another.
Such an initiative is likely to lift a bookmaker’s turnover and hence the profitability of the service.
It is worth noting that in the UK, a fourth place dividend is payable on races with 16 or more runners.
