Beautiful one day ...
Queenslanders are dominating the world, as we all know: Jessica Watson, Kevin Rudd, Clive Palmer.
The last two Melbourne Cup winners have wintered in Queensland.
Three of the last four Melbourne Cup/Caulfield Cup winners have wintered here: Viewed, Ethereal, Doriemus. The golden eras of our best trainers — T.J. Smith, Bart Cummings and the Freedmans — were when their horses regularly wintered in Queensland. Their fortunes nosedived when they stopped the practice.
Mark Kavanagh’s dramatic rise has coincided with his horses wintering in Queensland. Shocking was beaten here (Queensland Derby), as was Doriemus (three races in 1985).
Horses are like people — who thrives when freezing their backside off in a cold, wet, windswept paddock for months when they don’t have to? Horses thrive here in the sunny and mild Queensland winter, charging into spring in better shape physically and mentally. Any trainer or owner who wants that extra length or two in the spring only has to follow this simple plan.
Queensland summers are too hot for comfort, but our winters are perfect!
