Letter of the Week

Big call

Shepparton dogs is the scene. 1978 or thereabouts. Ray Boundy, a well known country and city bookie with a mouth to stir up punters, is in the mood to cause a commotion.
This evening he takes on a lady in the ring. “50s I lay,” he says. No takers. Okay.
“100 to one l lay,” on this fancied dog. It’s around 7s with other books, 15s at best.
The dog wins and Ray is besieged by the lady and other disbelieving punters.
He was short, but not short on the gab. And he paid out, I believe.
Sadly characters like Ray don’t exist now except at the odd bush meeting — and never to offer 100s on a favoured starter!
