Letter of the Week

No satisfaction

The other day I needed a plumber to do a job at home. Called him, he turned up, did the job. I was happy with the result, paid the bill.
A good friend of mine races some horses. Recently one of his horses was to race at Caulfield. Instructions were given, jockey ignored them and did the opposite, ran second.
Came back, “Sorry, my fault.” Big difference between one and two.
Next horse was to run in the bush with a different jockey. The barriers sprang open, the horse tailed off, nearly started to buck, ran last.
The jockey came in. “Sorry, my fault. I was meant to have a breastplate, forgot. What can I say?” Strapper missed it too. Gosh.
In both cases the jockey gets paid. (by the owners).
How is this possible? They did not do what was required by the customer. The first jockey took his prizemoney share, the second one his losing-ride fee. The owners got the bill from the trainers.
Something is very, very wrong here. The jockeys in both cases should not be paid as they did not do as instructed (confessed to it) and in one case forgot required gear.
My plumber is a true professional. He does as requested, and gets happily paid. Easy.
He couldn’t ride a horse to save himself and he only accepts money for a job correctly done. Sounds about right, does it not?
