Letter of the Week

Midweek magic

In his article on racing carnivals that are no more (10/6), Paul Richards states: “Flemington traditionally ran a three-day autumn carnival with the Australian Cup often on the Labour Day public holiday Monday.”
Richo based his article on changes since 1977, but in previous decades the VRC autumn carnival consisted of four days — in the early 1960s and perhaps earlier. The weight-for-age C.M. Lloyd Stakes was run on the Wednesday.
I recall Sky High winning the race on March 15, 1961, beating Aquanita. The other three horses in the field were Anonyme, New Statesman and Wenona Girl.
