For participants, punters, and the sport-starved stuck on the couch, let’s hope racing can last a fair way into the coronavirus shutdown.
If there’s a silver lining to this tragedy, maybe it’s that all racing participants will finally understand how much they have to lose if racing stopped forever.
Social licensing is real. The fact that whips don’t hurt is irrelevant — educating/converting the masses is impossible.
Banning the whip is similar to the current situation — any racing is better than none.
So remember that worst-case scenario, and evolve with the times so that it doesn’t eventuate.
