Letter of the Week

This game has it all

Paul Connors (3/12, I did not read your letters out of context. You are obviously very scientific in the way you go about selecting a winner and I admire you for your patience and success.
Unfortunately I haven’t the time (or perhaps am too lazy) to assess a starter as a 33-percent chance the day before. Instead I usually content myself with a few running doubles (Weir and Hayes/Dabernig are a must to include). You can’t go too far wrong and if a roughie in one of the legs gets up you might get a good collect.
However, like other readers I occasionally have a substantial wager on a horse I’ve been following or one I know that has been set for a particular race. This of course still does not always ensure success.
As you stated, some ex-punters lament that betting on horses is a mug’s game and they are correct, but it provides people with a lot of fun and pleasure and most importantly a sense of belonging.
I once heard a legendary race caller remark that his uncle became a millionaire through gambling on racehorses … sadly, before he began gambling on them he was a billionaire!
Today racing has become the sport of excitement and is leading the way from football and cricket, which have become overrated, bland and boring. Although I once enjoyed playing them I would now get more of a buzz watching my grandmother crochet than enduring a game on television.
Winning Post is always an enjoyable read because it presents such a variety of articles.
The first one I ever purchased contained an excellent letter by a bloke who described in detail his wedding day and how the priest was puzzled because the church’s side door was kept open so the groom and best man could receive signals on the results from Caulfield.
The content of that letter still makes me chuckle today and if my memory serves me correctly it was written by a bloke called Paul Connors.
That was the day I became a regular WP reader.
