Cup of cheer

Horse racing in Australia is part of our rich heritage. In each town there was the church the pub and the racecourse as our pioneer fathers explored and established this great country.

I had a great sense of coming home on Saturday when returning to Ceduna for its cup day on Saturday January 18.

In 2013 I joined my great friend and racing legend John Letts and came to Ceduna for the first time for the Friday night Calcutta and the races Saturday. My experience was memorable. The people, the camaraderie among the racing folk and the laidback feeling of enjoymentmade the day unforgettable.

Lettsy was missing this year and we all missed him. He will be back, rest assured.

Country racing survives when you have the passion and that is very evident from all at Ceduna.

The volunteers are hands-on men and women with the same goal — to make the races a day out and special for all.

Having called 25 Melbourne Cups and seen racing around the world, I can say cup day at Ceduna is unique. It’s fun and you see the joy it brings to so many. People come from near and far and the celebration is horse racing.

I mentioned coming home. In 1970 I got my first job in race calling and radio. It was at radio 5DN in Adelaide and my first call was at Mindarie-Halidon in SA in September 1970. Coming back some 44 years later to SA was special and Ceduna made me so welcome.

Hope to see you in 2015.
