Letter of the Week

Simply spectacular

I have written on this subject before but feel I must mention it again. My wife and I have recently moved from Tennant Creek in the NT to Casterton. Last Sunday week we went to the Casterton races and I believe we witnessed one of the greatest spectacles in racing in Australia.

I am referring to the steeplechase event, which is run over live hedges. It really is a magnificent sight seeing those horses fly over the jumps — great to watch on TV but unbelievable to see live.

The call of the race also was fantastic. I believe Rick McIntosh is the best caller in Australia and way ahead of everyone else when it comes to calling jumps races.

This letter is not intended to stir debate about the pros and cons of jumps racing, it is purely meant to comment on the spectacle we were privileged to see.
