Fair, but harsh

That the Geelong synthetic or "all weather" track has been the salvation of country/provincial racing in Victoria this past winter is a given.

There may well even be a strong argument for constructing a similar track in the Melbourne metropolitan area.

However, a word of caution.

Synthetic tracks in the USA are reportedly being pulled up as a consequence of broad-based industry concern there at the number of horses that have broken down or pulled up sore on them.

One thing is for sure and that is that synthetic tracks are less forgiving on horses with joint or knee problems than well maintained turf tracks.
