Sounds of silence

Having just moved to the Warrnambool area from Melbourne, and being a member of our local racing club, the strongest in the Western District and the spiritual home of jumps racing, I am shocked at the lack of available radio coverage of our great sport.

Being an owner and a friend of a lot of other owners, I wonder why pressure has not been brought to bear on the local radio stations to broadcast races, especially city meetings and Western District meetings.

Local member and Victorian Racing Minister Denis Napthine has done a marvellous job for racing, but he seems powerless to stop this anomaly, which affects his constituents. Once again the individual doesn’t seem to be getting customer service. Apart from a half-hour racing program on Saturday morning, from an eager and enthusiastic panel of presenters, we get nothing.

No Michael Christian and Mick McGuane discussing sport, no Shane Anderson with those silly duffers Alf Matthews and Racetrack Ralphy, no Nadia Horne with scratchings and previews, no Saturday morning interviews with trainers, jockeys or owners. No tips from the genius, Matt Stewart, so we know what to leave out of the quaddie, and no Deane Lester, so we know what to put in.

What we have to put up with is Nellie Mitchell and his band of Melbourne-based malcontents.

Lucky this is such a fantastic place to live. It’s a small price to pay for being in the best part of Victoria. But I would like to throw 3HA, 3CS and 3YB a message to add some racing content to their line-up.
