Galilee the great
In reference to Greg Gade’s letter (5/1), I too am a Galilee fan.
As a young man in my early 20s I was driving semis between Adelaide and Darwin. On race days I would stop off somewhere for a bet and a drink.
The 1966 Caulfield Cup saw me in Alice Springs and I put it all on Galilee.
A big day followed.
November saw me in Tennant Creek for Melbourne Cup day.
I parked my semi behind the betting shop and again put it all on Galilee.
Stinking hot weather, radio in pub playing up, static squeak … they’re off. Barman still playing with radio.
Someone shouts, “Bernie’s got it on in his ute!”
The whole bar rushes out on to the hot, dusty street. Great result.
The truck didn’t go anywhere that day.
I followed Galilee through all his other unbelievable wins.
A mighty horse, trained by a champion.
