Crisis averted

I’m heartily glad that Anamoe and I’m Thunderstruck managed to hold off the late charge of El Bodegon in last Saturday’s Cox Plate.
The reputation of Australia’s middle-distance thoroughbreds has taken enough of a battering this year courtesy of the ill-advised European campaign of a past-her-best Verry Elleegant.
If you needed reminding that trainers, not owners, should be making the decisions about racehorse campaigns, that debacle should have done the trick.
It would have been too much if a horse whose only Group 1 win came in a 2000-metre two-year-old race, and who hadn’t won all year, beat our best under our conditions. Frankly, it was too close for comfort in my opinion.
