Letter of the Week

Lessons of history

Congratulations to Alan McLean on last week’s story about Jim Moloney and Pat Hyland — a ripper read and a timely one.
The partnership between Moloney and Hyland could only have lasted so long because Moloney recognised that a jockey can retain elite ability at an age when athletes in most other sports are long retired. It’s a pity so few trainers of today recognise this, hence the lack of opportunities for such accomplished riders as Steven King and Darren Gauci.
I note, for example, that only three currently licensed jockeys have won the Goodwood twice — Ben Melham, Gauci and King. Only one of those three had a ride in the race last Saturday.
