Letter of the Week

Sunday too far away?

Rather than five consecutive weekdays off, five or six winter Sundays off seems the popular suggestion among Victorian participants.
But why waste those Sundays’ turnover now that jumps racing has the numbers to fill a raceday?
Ask the jumps brigade, but I’d be surprised if they didn’t leap at the chance to showcase their product over a series of consecutive winter Sundays.
The idea would kill two birds by showcasing jumpers every Sunday through winter and giving flat participants those Sundays off.
To mix it up, one of the more far-flung country clubs could stage its cup day on one of those Sundays.
Last Sunday there were 10 huge fields with six emergencies and other horses balloted out at both Sale and Warracknabeal.
On the Friday and Saturday there were small fields at the Mildura Cup carnival. That would be an ideal candidate for one of the otherwise vacant winter Sundays.
