I hope trainers, jockeys and stablehands enjoyed a peaceful and contemplative Good Friday this year, because I’m afraid their days off are numbered.
The NRL has already established its foothold, and the AFL will follow suit in 2015 — the only remaining question is the identity of the participating clubs. The question in racing is which jurisdiction will take the plunge first. My guess? Adelaide. It recently ran a program comprised entirely of Group 3 and listed races that went virtually unnoticed amid the Championships hype. Imagine if that meeting was the only racing in Australia for the day.
Objections from the training and riding fraternities might be swiftly overcome by a substantial prizemoney boost, aided by increased turnover.
