Outstanding Oliver
In plenty of racing press I read of these foreign "invaders" and what’s wrong with our racing, but while Damien Oliver rides like he did on Derby day there isn’t much wrong with the cups carnival.
Next year will be my 60th year of watching thoroughbred racing. In that time I’ve been privileged to see Neville Sellwood, Geoff Lane, George Moore, Pat Glennon, Harry White, Roy Higgins and Darren Beadman at their best, but Oliver stands easily among them, and his skills on display on Derby day were exciting to watch.
I still believe his ride on Don Eduardo in the 2002 AJC Derby of was the equal of anything I’ve ever seen in my lifetime. We’re fortunate to be able to watch his remarkable skills.
