Too much racing?
Surely it is within the competence of Racing Victoria Limited to have full understanding of the numbers of jockeys potentially available and the numbers of jockeys required for the various race meetings the schedule (Snippets 9/1).
Trainers should not be placed in the awkward and embarrassing position of having to scratch horses prepared for these meetings (not to mention the impost on owners) where there is a deficiency of jockeys, as was obviously the case at Terang January 1.
On a related topic, Richard Callander in the same edition correctly criticises the $40,000 stakemoney the AJC put up for the subordinate races on its program for New Year’s Day, describing this as an embarrassment and ordinary.
Are we reaching a position where there are simply too many meetings or too much racing?
