Classic move

Rather than shorten the Victoria Derby and Oaks to 2000 metres (as many have requested), why not belatedly follow NSW’s ultra-successful lead, and shift those classics to the autumn?
The Australian Guineas, to 2000 metres, and Matriarch Stakes could adequately replace them in the spring carnival.
That would fix the immaturity problem whilst keeping the derby at 2500 metres.
And If we’re worried about spring three-year-old maturity, surely spring two-year-olds are even more vulnerable?
If there were no two-year-old races until Christmas there’d be an extra few months’ maturing time without losing, or overly affecting, any mega two-year-old races.
