No place to stay
When trainer Bryce Stanaway won an 1850-metre race with Ventura Highway at Terang (24/1) he described Mornington and Hanging Rock, which was running a 2400-metre race on Australia Day, as “goat tracks” for stayers.
Terang, with its 2040-metre circuit, wide expanses and 400 metre straight, is often described as “the Femington of the bush” — Stanaway himself used those very words.
Given its dimensions, however, Terang seems to be remarkably unfriendly towards stayers.
Of the 49 races run at Terang in 2016 only two were at 2150 metres. We can now make that two in 81 races because in the four Terang meetings in 2017 no race has been longer than 1850 metres. None was further than 1600 metres on March 2.
Why? What a wasted resource if you happen to own a stayer. If it annoys me it must infuriate Stanaway.
