Letter of the Week

Heaven knows I'm miserable now

In six of the nine races at Caulfield last Saturday, the first three around the turn produced the quinella.
Going into the last race, Morrissy had had two starts over 1400 metres. In those starts he settled sixth of 14 (Flemington, 14/12/19) and fifth of nine (Caulfield, 13/7/19).
In 17 starts prior to last Saturday he had settled second once (in a Ballarat Class 1, 24/3/19).
At Caulfield last Saturday he was ridden vigorously to sit second outside obvious leader Sonaree, and guess what, punters? Morrissy won.
He was backed from $7.50 to $4.50 during the day (after race three), easing back to start at $6.
Not one speed map was correct. I have yet to hear of any form student or genius of the turf who predicted Morrissy would settle second. Nor did I see information anywhere about a change of tactics. Nor was there any mention of such a change in the stewards’ report.
This was the last leg of the quad and second leg of the daily double.
Aptly, the horse’s near namesake, Mancunian singer Morrissey, had a hit single in 1994 called “Why Don’t You Find Out For Yourself.”
Poor, poor punter.
