Cheap Galaxy

The Sydney autumn carnival has provided excellent racing, but I thought The Galaxy was ordinary for what was supposed to be a Group 1 race.

Not one of the acceptors was a Group 1 winner, which strongly suggests that the field was blow Group 1 quality.

The winner, Temple of Boom, had recently carried 54.5kg in the Newmarket and run 10th. In The Galaxy he carried 57kg and won well. The field was certainly below standard.

I am sure that the stake money of $350,000 — making it one of the cheapest Group 1s around — had a lot to do with it. That sort of money, for a handicap race, is not going to attract the top horses. The prizemoney got the field it deserved — Group 2 and 3 horses.
